As we start the new school year this newsletter is a quick welcome to everyone. To our returning community members, it will be great to see you around campus again and to our new members, a warm welcome and I hope that you will feel at home very quickly.
Our D1 students are already on campus with some of our D2 students learning about UWC, the IB, Moshi and generally getting to know each other. For the rest of the school, our residential students will be arriving this weekend, and classes start on Monday the 12th.
I would like to remind everyone that while we try to keep everyone informed on campus through the weekly newsletter, one of the best ways to see what is coming up on campus is through the calendar on our website. This has a general tab for the school as well as a campus specific tab.
If you need to contact me, please feel free to email me at bobcofer@uwcea.org.

Ben’s Corner
Karibu Sana! For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ben Morley and I am excited to be entering my seventh year as Deputy Head here in Moshi. I will be supporting teaching and learning from EC-D2, working alongside the students and teachers and, hopefully, contributing in any way I can. I have four children of my own and, rather fittingly this year, they are spread across the PYP, MYP and DP!
I trust that everyone is rested, recharged and ready for what promises to be another fulfilling year of living and learning together. I will strive to continue to use my little “corner” of the newsletter to share reflections about ongoing learning across the school, to highlight specific events (such as the upcoming 24 Hour Run!!!!) or share details of special days. Above all, I hope to celebrate our collective achievements.
A particularly warm welcome to new students, teachers, staff and families to the UWCEA community. We hope your time with us is richly rewarding, full of adventure, both within and beyond the campus, and that you go on to form friendships that last a lifetime. Remember, we are all connected by our Guiding Statements. These Guiding Statements are and should always remain aspirational. They are not the end result but, rather, something we should try and move a little bit closer to each and every day. Indeed, we share a collective responsibility to do all we can to continue working towards these.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to all the support and ancillary staff for their ongoing efforts over the “break” in making sure the campus is game ready for Monday 12th August.
Ben Morley – Deputy Head of Campus

Diploma News
A very warm welcome to our incoming D1 students and a happy return to our D2s.
I want to take a brief moment to introduce myself. My name is Catherine Dowie and I will be taking over the role of DP coordinator this year. At the end of last academic year, Margaret Brunt stepped down from the position and I want to thank her for all she has done to support our diploma students. She will continue to support our school as the CAS & Pamoja coordinator and will continue teaching in the Math department.
We have an exciting and full year of learning ahead of us. By now, most students should be able to see their timetable and classes on our online learning platform, Learn. Students are requested to check the information carefully and let me know if there are any problems. This applies to both D1 and D2 students although the D1 timetables are not complete as we finalise subject choices this week. Parents can also access this information at www.learn.uwcea.org and log in using their UWC parent account.
We do want to draw your attention to a change in our attendance policy. Students are expected to attend 90% of all classes as a graduation requirement. More information will be shared with the students but please make sure you do not book flights home during the school term, as these missed days may impact your graduation eligibility.
And finally, even though it seems like a long time away, the D2 graduation will take place on the 23 May 2025. I share this date so you can begin to plan your year – each D2 student can invite 3 guests to the graduation. We look forward to all the hard work that will happen between now and then.
Greetings from the MYP department! We are very excited to start yet another academic year! As we prepare to embark on another exciting academic year filled with opportunities for “living and learning” together, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate and look forward.
First and foremost, a hearty congratulations to our former M5 students, now D1s, for their achievements in their MYP Personal Projects and for attaining an average above the world average. We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and wish you the best of luck as DP students. You will be greatly missed!
To our new students joining us this year, a warm welcome! We are thrilled to have you as part of our MYP family. And to all our returning students, we are excited to continue our journey together. Please remember that the school year starts on August 12th. Details about the first week will be shared via email very soon.
We look forward to a fantastic year ahead with all of you!

PYP News
Welcome back everyone and a special welcome to families who are joining us for the first time. I hope you all had a great break. The PYP team is looking forward to a happy and productive year with your children. The individual classroom teacher articles below should give you any necessary information for the first week back. You will be sent a copy of your child’s schedule as soon as it is fixed and any important dates will be shared soon. After school clubs won’t start straight away – as soon as we have the options for this quarter and the starting date we will share that with you. Please ensure that your child wears a UWCEA T-shirt to school every day. These are on sale in the development office so please call in next week to purchase some if necessary. If you have any questions please email me or your child’s teacher. We look forward to seeing the children and hearing all of their news on Monday, 12th August at 7:30am. Classes finish at 1:10pm every day (11:20 for EC) apart from Friday when all classes finish at 12:30pm. Please contact me on deborahmills@uwcea.org if you have any questions.

A fantastic school year awaits us in P 2/3! There’s so much to learn and we have terrific units of inquiry. On Monday, information about our schedule and upcoming events will be sent home. All that is needed for the first day is a healthy snack, a water bottle, indoor shoes, and a great attitude! We will take our time this week settling into routines and getting to know each other. P4/5 Class
I hope you and your children have enjoyed a relaxing break. Ms. Catherine and I are looking forward to meeting the P4/5 children next week. We have lots of fun activities planned for the first week back. If your child would like to share a photo of his/her activities during the break please send in a paper copy or email me a photo to be projected onto the screen. I will send home a schedule once school begins but just for your information, our PE day is Tuesday and our swimming day is Thursday. Ideally, the children should always have shoes suitable for running in school as we sometimes head out to the pitch for running games.
The children should have the following items in school every day:
a reusable water bottle labelled with your child’s name
a pair of crocs, malapas or slippers that can be worn inside the classroom.
a healthy snack – no junk food please
a hat to wear on sunny days
