Dear Parents

The Championship winning Girls Under-19 Football Team (pictured above).

Its been really nice to see our students enjoying the open air this week and the recent Outdoor Pursuits trip to Ngorongoro almost constitutes our flagship OP trip! The walk from the mist laden meadows of Engaruka in the Ngorongoro Highlands to the sweltering soda pans of Lake Natron is spectacular – and that is an undertstatement. I haven’t met up with any of the participants since they arrived back this afternoon but I am certain they will have enjoyed the trip of a lifetime. Welcome back!

On Saturday our Girls Under-19 Football Team made the short journey across town to play in a schools’ tournament. All the big footballing schools were present. The team was fantastic and everyone played their very best with the reward of being crowned overall champions at the end of the day! Our goalkeeper, Lucia (D1) is incerdibly talented and between her and her defence the team did not conced a single goal all tournament. Our goalscorers were Ida (2), Zarine (2) and Jess (2).

As a members of the school management team we have been following the bulletins about the Marburg’s virus in western Tanzania and the Ebola virus in Uganda. Fortunately we are able to receive the very best advice about these outbreaks as the big health organisations are already here on the scene and quick to inform us about the work they do to contain such outbreaks. We will always act with the best interests of our studenst and staff in mind and we will give you an update at the start of the week to come.

Enjoy the week ahead!

Primary Years Programme News

The Forest School is under way again this quarter and we are already having fun digging holes and learning more about outdoor living!

Our CCA program is fully underway and the students are enjoying the opportunities they are given.

Forest School students are exploring the natural environment by making mobiles out of natural materials. The design club have made marble runs and lego models. The zumba and art club have been dancing and making dolls. Whilst the Student Council are planning our next PYP event. What a fantastic range of activities.

MYP ‘Sustainable Fishing’

M4 and M5 practising their workshop on sustainable fishing. Here, pictured above, M3 are ‘fishing’, Warden Jack is on the look out for rule breaking, and Janvi the money lender is exploiting those families who have fallen on hard times.

Next week a small group of M4 and M5 students will travel to the AISA conference to experience the Global Issues Service Summit. Each participating school will present a workshop for their fellow participants from around Africa. Our MYP students chose the theme of coastal communities, running a simulation of weekly life for coastal communities in Tanzania, under threat from globalisation of trading, climate change and storms, teams battle to ‘fish’ as unscrupulous money lenders look for those who are struggling and wardens look out for rule breakers. Here they are practising their workshop with M3 as participants, so we can perfect the workshop before we travel next week.

It has been a very busy week indeed as the D2 students are in the middle of their mock exams (see image above). These exams are crucial for students as they provide a realistic simulation of the final International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, helping them identify strengths and areas for improvement. These practice exams reduce anxiety by familiarizing students with exam conditions, time management, and question formats. Additionally, mock exams offer valuable feedback from teachers, allowing students to refine their study strategies and improve performance. By treating mocks seriously, students can boost their confidence and enhance their chances of achieving their desired IB scores.

The D1 students have been designated supervisors for the EEs and refining their research questions. In addition various classes have started to introduce or even start their internal assessments to try and spread the intense workload out across the program. Designed to develop well-rounded, critical thinkers, IB students gain not only subject knowledge but also key life skills such as research, time management, and intercultural understanding.

A trip to Braeburn School to watch the musical ‘The Big Life’

In the picture above, our D2s, Sana, Malak, Kayla had a well-deserved break between Mocks and went to enjoy the show.

18 boarding students enjoyed a visit to Braeburn to watch their superb performance of The Big Life. A joyful and uplifting production, where the story of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost meets that of the Windrush generation in a fun-packed musical. It was thoroughly entertaining: brilliant acting, music and choreography with a poignant message to appreciate and value every human life.
