Upcoming dates

Mon 23rd-27th Sept – MYP MAP Testing

Tue 24th Sept – Diploma Parent Village Meeting on Zoom

https://forms.gle/zwgJfroXhKPugTe9A

Fri 4th Oct – Last day of Quarter 1

Wed 16th Oct – First day of Quarter 2

Dear Parents

Whilst the 24 Hour Run was in full swing in Moshi, the Arusha Campus played host to its own UWC Day Celebrations and an impromptu fundraiser called ‘Move It’ The brainchild of the M3 Girls, they organised the whiole thing! Everyone enjoyed the activities on their way to raising a whopping 800,000 shillings for our schalrship fund!

Lots of travelling for the students and staff this week. Buses to the ocean front last weekend, another bus up to Marangu on Mt Kilimanjaro and on Friday we transported 95 students to Moshi Campus for the 24 Hour Run. Unfiortunately not all students who wanted to participate were able to, simply because we didn’t have enough seats on buses. So much organisation goes into moving us around this beautiful country and almost all of it comes down to the OP Team of Mr Brian and Mr Frank as well as the outstanding driver team of Mr Jastine, Mr Samwel, Mr Hussein and Mr Sanga. Thank you for being so careful and precise with your planning and driving.

Have a good week!

Primary Years Programme News

P1/2 (above) sharing their units with their parents.

End of unit celebrations are an important way to close each of our units of inquiry. It’s fantastic to watch students share their learning within our school community.
P1/2 presented their art gallery and songs to their parents.
P3 organised a fancy dress fun run to raise money for the 24 Hour run being held on Moshi campus.
P4 presented powerpoints to their parents about Heroes.
P5 participated in discussions about unity and created their own value. In ICT they created a table of the similarities and differences of different religions.
P6 has learned lots about different government styles and leaders. They will share this next week at Share Time.

Art in the PYP

Linh (P2) produced this masterpiece this week in answer to the question ‘What is Pop Art?’!

…and Music in the Early Childhood!

This week the Early Childhood children had their first experience of xylophones (see image above). This proved exceptionally popular and it was difficult to tear them away at the end of the lesson!

P3 self initiated Fun Run

As part of their work on communities and how we can support others, P3 devoted 45 minutes of their day on Thursday to doing a fun run and raising funds!

International Festival

We are excited to announce that our International Festival is back after a five year hiatus. This vibrant celebration of cultures is a unique opportunity for students and parents from different countries to come together. We love for YOU (students, parents, teachers) to take part in this wonderful event by showcasing what makes your culture special—whether through food, music, dance, art, or traditional attire. Once you sign up, you will be matched with others from your country/region. We’d love to see new faces AND welcome back those students and parents who helped make this event so special in the past!

MYP Round-up

Well done to all MYP students who were involved in the 24 hr run on Moshi campus or Move It Day on Arusha campus! Both were about fun and fundraising for our scholarship fund and showcased our students commitment to Service as Action. Action (learning by doing and experiencing) is a key component of the MYP curriculum and service is regarded as a subset of action.  MYP students strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Can you believe we just have two weeks to go until the end of Quarter 1? MYP will keep busy in these weeks with:

M1-3 MAP tests will take place from Monday 23 – Thursday 26 September. Once we have completed the testing, we will share the results with parents in a family report.

3 Way Conferences will be held on Thursday 3 October. There will be no normal classes this day, instead students and their parents will only come in for meetings they have booked with subject teachers. More information about how to sign up will be shared by email.

Friday 4 October is the last day of the quarter. No normal lessons, but students will take part in House Games in the morning. We will end quarter 1 with a whole school assembly starting at 11am. School closes at 12noon on this day, please arrange for an early pick up.

OP Reefs Exploration

We had a great experience at Fish Eagle Point for the OP Reef trip (see montage above) with secondary students.  We built on further appreciation and understanding for marine biodiversity and conservation.

OP Peaks Camp Craft

M1 headed off on Campcraft weekend, joined by our new students in M2 and M3. The whole gang is pictured above with Mr Frank.

The weekend aims to introduce our younger MYP students to the skills needed on our OP program. Putting up tents, preparing food, packing bags properly and developing the resilience needed on walks – our students faced it all with a smile, and determination. We hope this experience will encourage them to take up the opportunities offered by our varied OP program as they progress through the school.

All M1’s as well as the new M2’s and 3’s ventured off to the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro to learn the in’s and out’s of the UWC OP experience. Along with the M1’s from UWC Moshi campus we learnt how to set up our tents, look after equipment, work as a team by preparing, cooking and cleaning for all of our meals as well as how to pack and carry all of our belongings. We had a great time during our trip and all of the students worked hard to keep up and come together to ensure a smooth and enjoyable camp.

University and Career Guidance News

Photo right: A group of D2 students attended a university fair at St. Constantine’s School focused on opportunities in the UK, Europe, Canada and Australia.

We had several great university visits this week. Here are some highlights:

On Monday College of the Atlantic, a Davis Scholars partner visited. Even though it was a holiday and school was officially closed, we had a great turnout.

On Tuesday, an online visit with Nottingham Trent University in the UK (which we don’t have any pictures from, unfortunately).

On Wednesday, Methodist University, a Davis Scholars partner visited and held an information session for students during the day and then a workshop on financial aid and the CSS Profile in the evening for students and parents. We will be sharing a copy of the presentation soon.

On Thursday we had a joint visit from Columbia University and Princeton University in the US, both Davis Scholar partners. We had an info session and then some of our students had lunch with the two admissions representatives.

We have many more visits coming up! Please check the calendar  here https://sites.google.com/uwcea.org/uwcea-careers/calendar-overview/calendar-of-college-fairs-in-person-virtual-visits regularly as we continue to add opportunities each week.

Another busy week on campus as we celebrated UWC Day with the 24 hour run on Moshi Campus as well as UWC themed games on Arusha. Getting the whole school together was a wonderful way to join in and be proud that we are part of the UWC movement as mentioned by one of our MYP students. Thank you to the house council and all of their hard work.
The D2s have been working furiously to keep up with deadlines and spent some time reflecting on screen time during life skills as ensuring that we still maintain a balanced lifestyle. Very difficult when they have multiple assessments due as well as college applications. The D1s have been picking up speed as their assessments begin whilst also enjoying the first OP trips and all of the extracurriculars on offer. With MUN last weekend, students are now organising TEDex as well as preparing for project week which is quickly approaching in quarter 2.

We have our first DP parent zoom of the quarter on Tuesday at 2.00pm EAT. Please join us to ask questions and get an idea of life on campus. If you have specific questions we ask that you fill out the googleform here https://forms.gle/nVSn7xHXYkmVWeb87 to help us prepare for the Q1 DP Parent Zoom

UWC East Africa Arusha Campus Residential Activities

Last weekend a group of boarding students (above) went on a hike in the Usa River area. Mr. Andrew led the hike and Mr. Kendis and his kids tagged along as well.
