UWC East Africa Arusha Campus Newsletter Sunday 1st September 2024

This weekend, over two hundred D1 students and teachers and staff made their way into the Tanzanian wilderness north of Mt Meru to practice our camp craft. A colossal feat of organisation, I would like to thank our OP team of Mr Bryan, Mr Andy, Mr Isaac, Mr Salimu and Mr Frank. What a team!

Upcoming dates

Thur 5th-6th Sept – XP Bronze Adventure (M4)

Wed 11th-15th Sept – OP Reefs Exploration

Mon 16-20th Sept – PYP MAP Testing

Fri 20th Sept – 24 Hour Run

Mon 23rd-27th Sept – MYP MAP Testing

Dear Parents

The pictures above, and below my newsletter piece, show three of the four walking groups that traversed the dry, lower slopes of Mt Meru this weekend.

A short newsletter this week. Many of us have just returned from the north side oif Mt Meru where we have been camping with the D1 classes from both campuses. Each D1 student engaged in a walk of around 3-4 hours yesterday afternoon. The idea of the weekend was to model and demonstrate camp craft skills which students will learn and retain for their future OP trips. Of course, this introductory weekend is also a chance for everyone to try out the experience and decide that OP is NOT for them! That is perfectly ok as well! In the event, the weekend went without mishap and hopefully everyone had a terrific time.

I think the most satisfying part of the weekend for me was to see students engaging so freely with our Tanzanian (Maasai) guides. Each group constituted 50 D1 walkers and the guides had their work cut out keeping each group interested, motivated and on the move. The female and male guide in each group were provided by the local Maasai community and demonstrated great awareness for their audience. The connections that were made this weekend between Maasai and our new students was heart warming, particulalry when we look around at a world so torn apart by hate and an inability to try and understand other people.

Have a super week,

Phil

Primary Years Programme News

P5 and P6 developing their hand eye coordination in rounders with Mrs Adele

Over the last two weeks the teachers have been learning different sporting skills. We encourage all our students to develop their hand-eye coordination in many different ways.

Hand-eye coordination is an important part of daily life. It is a skill that helps people do basic activities such as writing, driving, putting a key in a lock or cooking.

Try playing games and catch: Playing catch may help improve hand-eye coordination as it requires the hands and eyes to work together to catch and throw a ball. Use different sized and shaped balls. Board games such as snakes and ladders and bingo help improve hand eye coordination too. Jigsaw puzzles are great for developing coordination and problem solving.

Also drawing, painting, threading and writing may help improve hand-eye coordination as it requires the hands and eyes to work together to move the pen or pencil across the paper.

Cooking, kneading, shaping biscuits and filling cupcake cases are a fun way to develop hand-eye coordination.

If you pass through the PYP corridor that leads to the big field, you will see this wonderful display (below) which is the PYP inter house art competition.

Residential Student Activities

Residential students enjoy a fabric painting session with Miss Amanda last weekend.

Every weekend, the teachers at Arusha Campus arrange and offer activities for our residential students. We try and offer a variety of activities so that students are faced with a choice. Miss Amanda’s fabric painting activity was clearly a hit with this group of students.

From left (below) Jaden, Zora, Bupe, Dove, Charlene and Mary display their finished products at the end of a whole weekend of painting.

Model United Nations at Arusha Campus

Hello everyone,

MUN has returned to the Arusha campus after a one-year hiatus. The conference will be held from the 13th to the 15th of September. Anyone can sign up regardless of their previous experience. MUN is here to unite us and teach us how to advocate and debate. And most importantly to make new friends and have fun. It’s so easy to be a Host Parent….

Dear UWC East Africa community,

For the last few years, we have run a wonderful Host Family Programme, connecting you with our Residential Students. We are incredibly grateful for the willingness and availability many of you have shown in the past and we, the Residential Staff team, would like to keep building on these strong foundations.

This programme allows our students to:

1 – engage with the school community,
2 – develop meaningful relationships for now and the future,
3 – experience life in Arusha and more, beyond our school campus,
4 – and more!

If you want to be a Host Family again or become one, please take 5 minutes to fill in this Host Families Questionnaire https://forms.gle/6hiNtL3BbsmjtwJU6 AND fulfill the agreement/Safeguarding section before Friday September 6. The general expectation (more details at the end of this questionnaire) is to “connect with their students once per school quarter (four times a year), whether it is for a walk, a coffee/tea, a dinner, a day trip, a sleepover, or anything else that respects your availability.”

Kind regards,

Katy Hacias, Interim Head of Boarding
