Bread making in P5 was the highlight of my week. Here they are enjoying the fruits if their labour!

Our Co-curricular Activities (CCA’s) start next week and so a big thanks to Miss Amanda and Miss Caitrin organising those for us. There was a mini-crisi on CCA sign up day when the internet traffic on our server was so great that in the end no-one could access the sign-up platform! We hope we have rectified the problem but will have to wait until next quarter’s sign up to find out.

When CCA’s start its always rewarding to see students embark on their journey to prvide service to the community or try out new activiies and develop alien skills. This extra-curricular aspect of our education is so important to us and really is no less important than than the work that goes on in the classrooms.

On Tuesday our quarterly CCA fair ran smoothly. Our CCA leaders reminded us of the fantastic opportunities we have available this quarter.

Thank you for coming along to our PYP parent sessions. We hope they were useful. The P4 class will have theirs on Tuesday 27th August at 8.00am.

All of the classes are inquiring into their units with fun and active learning.

The P6’s are learning about different types of Governance. The P5’s are expressing themselves through making bread. P4 are creating superhero comic strips. P3 are visiting and designing their own Bomas. P1/2 have been expressing themselves through different stories. NEC has been having lots of fun creating, singing and playing together.

What a great way to start the year!

Thank you to all parents who joined to Meet the Teachers on Wednesday. Parents also had the opportunity to meet their child’s mentor – Ms Caitrin (M1), Mr Alli (M2), Ms Hilary (M3), Mr Bryan (M4) and Mr Gift (M5). This was followed by information sessions about XP and the M5 eAssessments. Another info session this week as M1 parents and parents new to MYP are invited at 8am on Friday 30th August to learn more about our Middle Years Programme.

Students settled into their class routines this week. Pictured is the M1 class learning about safety in the Science labs from Ms Christabel. On Friday, the M5 PHE students sprinted into the weekend (see image below)

The cultural nights are an exciting opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate different cultures from around the world. This Sunday, we are thrilled to kick off the cultural nights with a special focus on Tanzania. Our students lead these engaging and informative presentations, giving everyone a chance to learn about each other’s countries and traditions. It is a fantastic way to embrace diversity and connect through sharing games, delicious food, and much more.

Mr Stephane and Miss Rachel asked students to build the highest possible free-standing tower with 10 spaghetti strands and 15 marshmallows. Here is one team in action above. The rest was left to the students’ creativity and maybe a bit of knowledge and logic! The main aim was to use their collaborative and communication skills.

The highest tower was in D1D with 70.8cm

Congratulations to the following auditonees that have made it into our magical production of Disney’s Mary Poppins Jnr. Please know that the quantity of auditionees was significantly larger than last year, and that many considerations and discussions have ensued after each audition session.

Please note that Monday 3-5pm and Wednesday is a full rehearsal for all the above students in the Performance area. Be present and ready for the Mary Poppins Journey. A full schedule of rehearsal times and dates will follow for students and parents once rehearsals begin.

Thank you to all the students who brought their “A game” to our auditions in the last two weeks and we are ready and excited to get going for the December 6th/7th performances!

The Plains hikers felt very small when they stood in some elephant footprints on their walk.

Last weekend, to kick off a fantastic first week of school, a small group of students set out to hike nearly 40 kilometers between Tarangire and Lake Manyara over three beautiful sunny days. Along the way, we spotted countless herds of zebra and wildebeest, trekked in the massive footprints of elephants, and played Mr. Frank’s favorite game “what’s that bird?” We also learned about how the termites build their mounds, the formation of the Great Rift Valley, and all about the ecosystem of the area and how it’s been impacted by human development and climate change. Back at camp, students and staff came together for afternoons filled with lots of games and laughter before heading back to campus on Sunday. A fun time was had by all, and everyone is looking forward to doing future OP Plains trips to continue exploring and learning about the natural wonders at our doorstep!

These visits are a wonderful opportunity for our D1 and D2 students to learn about particular universities as well as about what they are looking for after they graduate from UWCEA. For the last few years, we have run a wonderful Host Family Programme, connecting you with our Residential Students. We are incredibly grateful for the willingness and availability many of you have shown in the past and we, the Residential Staff team, would like to keep building on these strong foundations.

This programme allows our students to:

1 – engage with the school community,
2 – develop meaningful relationships for now and the future,
3 – experience life in Arusha and more, beyond our school campus,

If you want to be a Host Family again or become one, please take 5 minutes to fill in this Host Families Questionnaire https://forms.gle/6hiNtL3BbsmjtwJU6 AND fulfill the agreement/Safeguarding section before Friday September 6. The general expectation (more details at the end of this questionnaire) is to “connect with their students once per school quarter (four times a year), whether it is for a walk, a coffee/tea, a dinner, a day trip, a sleepover, or anything else that respects your availability.”

Whether it is to encourage a loved one or enjoy a night of surprise, the numerous skills of our students will certainly blow you away. Our artists will eagerly wait for you at 19h30 in the PA. Do not miss out!

For students, a google form will be sent to all students (and parents) of MYP and DP in the coming days for sign up of your individual/group acts.
