Dear Parents

The successful Arusha Campus Athletics Squad pictured at yesterday’s Inter Schools Athletics Championships

I am so sorry that the Arusha newsletter has not been produced for two weeks – lots going on! I am pleased to say the production line is back on and this week we have news about our Week Without Walls as well as the athletics days that we have hosted on campus this week. We have a large outdoor pursuits group out this weekend in the North Pare mountains.

Many of our OP and Curriculum trips head to the mountains that comprise the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania. And not enough is made of the fact that these mountains exist in Tanzania. The Eastern Arc Forests are among the oldest and most biologically diverse forests in the world and contain extraordinarily high levels of endemic plant and animal species. The forests on the tops of these mountains were left behind as the old forests at lower elevations retreated and were destroyed. We are now left with islands of forest which harbour incredibly diverse species from all parts of the animal and plant kingdoms.

The Eastern Arc Mountains are one of only 36 designated biodiversity hot spots worldwide and these mountains contain at least 800 endemic plant species, 10 endemic mammals, 19 endemic birds, 31 endemic reptiles and 40 endemic amphibians. The 2006 IUCN Red List identifies 78 vertebrate species as threatened in the Eastern Arc Mountains including 8 critically endangered species. If you want to find out more go to https://www.cepf.net/our-work/biodiversity-hotspots/coastal-forests-eastern-africa

We are truly lucky to live and work and be able to explore in such a diverse and beauitiful country.

Have a great weekend

Breakfast in P1 and P2

P1/P2 (pictured above) celebrated the end of our unit in style! We had a wonderful breakfast party, and the children came dressed in their comfiest pajamas. A big thank you to all the parents who brought in delicious traditional breakfast to share with the class. It was a lovely way to wrap up our unit and create some special memories together.

Week Without Walls M4 Trip to Simba Farm

For the M4 IDU trip this year, we went to Simba farm in west Kilimanjaro (see image above). The subjects that were combined were Maths and Science. During the trip there were some unforeseen weather conditions causing lots of peoples tents to flood and we sadly had to leave on Thursday but even though there were some issues with our tents and the rain we still enjoyed the trip a lot. On the trip we had to measure trees and their biomass and we also measured temperatures at different elevations. We also went on a scenic forest hike on the last day of the trip. It was a very wonderful trip and it is possibly the best one WWW we have been on. And we want to thank all of the teachers from both campuses for making the trip fun and helping us through all of the work.

Diploma students, above, enjoying the relief of simple cookie making!

It has been an especially busy quarter in Diploma with University applications and never ending deadlines. Our students have been working hard to manage their workload and still participate in the countless sporting activities and extracurriculars like expressionfest and the blood drive. Student leadership and initiative in event planning is highly valued and we encourage students to work with a supervisor to ensure everything runs smoothly.

D1 students have been leading workshops during our life skills and diploma success skills which has been very popular. Teaching each other about topics/skills they find important helps to build a strong sense of community. Workshops recently held were Down syndrome and society, Learning Russian, HIV/Aids awareness, Eating disorders run by our peer mentors and of course how to change a car tyre! Everyone brings something valuable to the table. This week they have been out and about for project week where they took action with different organizations. We can’t wait to hear about their adventures and the lessons about service and community projects when they return.

D2s have had a small sense of relief with a week to catch up on work such as their extended essay and final internal assessments on a very quiet secondary campus. Teachers have been around to support them, running review sessions and meetings to guide them in finalising work. With not much left to the quarter they are completing internal orals next week, extended essay final deadlines for December 5th and prepping for Mock exams February 3rd. We want to remind students that we have valuable support systems in school such as the inclusion team, social and emotional counseling as well as the peer tutoring program. Time is flying and before you know it, it will be graduation. Sprinkled across the week we had various activities on offer to give students a mental break and have some fun. Karaoke, Ultimate frisbee, Trivia, Laughing Yoga, card games and cookie decorating to mention a few!

Miriam the Mathematician!

This week, Mariam Maingu D2 (pictured above) participated in the 2024 Senior Tanzania Mathematics Olympiad (TAMO) organized by the Mathematical association of Tanzania (Chama Cha Hisabati Tanzania) (MAT/CHAHITA) and took position 9 nationally among the girls. Congratulatiions to you Mariam!

University and Career Guidance News

Pictured above are some photos that capture the hard work leading up to this deadline during nighttime application workshops.

November 1 was a major deadline for many of our D2 students; this is the first deadline for many colleges and universities in the U.S. Our D2 students worked for months to get their applications ready for the deadline and our students collectively submitted 177 applications, not only to universities in the U.S. but also to unis in Canada and the U.K. Congratulations to the Class of 2025 on reaching this exciting milestone!

And a huge congratulations to Lydie Baeni (pictured below) for being the first student in the Class of 2025 to receive a university acceptance! Lydie received this acceptance very early because she applied very early; there will be many, many more acceptances to share in the future. We are all so proud of you and excited for you, Lydie!

AISA Conference in Cape Town: Empowering UWCEA Educators (picture above)

We’re excited to share that four of our dedicated teachers Baden and Jamie from the Moshi campus, along with Gift and Christabel from the Arusha campus are currently in Cape Town, South Africa, attending the 2024 AISA Conference. They traveled on October 30th to join educators from across Africa and beyond in an event focused on advancing international education and promoting best practices in teaching and leadership.

AISA, the Association of International Schools in Africa, plays a vital role in supporting our educators through valuable professional development opportunities. The conference offers workshops, networking sessions, and learning experiences that our teachers can bring back to UWCEA, enriching our school community and enhancing student learning.

We look forward to hearing about the insights they gain and the innovative ideas they’ll share with us upon their return!

William Mmassy,

AISA Representative, UWCEA.
