Arusha Campus News – 12 Apr 2019

Greetings from UWC Waterford Kamhlaba in the Kingdom of Eswatini. A delegation of teachers from ISM, including the Director flew down on Wednesday night and we have been here for Thursday and much of Friday. The purpose? To familiarise ourselves with established UWC practices and to ask as many questions as possible to ready ourselves for our grand opening in August.

So as I enjoy the Swaziland chills, I shall leave you in the capable hands of Darren who is this week’s newsletter editor.

The second week of the fourth quarter has been another busy time for us in Arusha. We have seen the P4s, 5s and 6s taking part in MAP tests, assessing their mathematical, language and reading skills; well done to them all for their efforts. We will hand over to the M1s, 2s and 3s next week for their MAP tests, starting Monday and finishing on Thursday.

The P6 students are also actively working on their exhibition topics, getting ready for their finale on Wednesday 8 May; mark your calendars and come along to see what they have been doing. Also see the adverts for P6 action below.

Please remember that Friday 19 and Monday 22 April are non-school days. Over the coming weeks we also have two one-day holidays: Friday 26 April (Union Day) and Wednesday 1 May (Workers Day).

This week, M5 students completed their mock on-screen examinations in English, Mathematics, Sciences, I&S and Interdisciplinary (English and Sciences). We wish the M5 class all the best for their final MYP on-screen examinations on May 14-24. During that time, M5 students will have a modified timetable where ePortfolio classes will be used as Study Blocks to prepare for exams. There will also be a few optional early relase where students can go home and review at home if they wish. More information will be emailed to M5 students and parents directly.

ISM is excited to host the second edition of the Umoja UWC short course in Tanzania. The course will bring together 24 young individuals from all around the world under the theme “Coming Together to Build Community”.

Summit magazine is going digital-first and cutting down on print editions as the school takes steps towards reducing wastefulness.

The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) is an internationally recognized diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the competency of candidates in the French Language.  The DELF is open to non-native French students who would like their French skills to be recognized for personal or professional purposes.

UWC humanitarian project competition: your chance to make a positive change in Tanzania!

As we are becoming a UWC, our school is invited to participate in a service project initiative called ‘Aurora’ which is opened to the 17 other UWCs around the world.
Project proposals must address a concrete humanitarian concern relevant to our geographic location (i.e. the concern must have an impact on our local communities or environments). Humanitarian concerns may include, for example: child homelessness/orphans, women’s health/FGM, the refugee crisis etc. 
The top 3 project proposals will be funded in order to make them happen (from 500 USD up to 4,000 USD). Finalists teams will be invited to UWC Dilijan in Armenia in October 2019 to present their proposals and receive fundings for their project.
The activities or actions proposed as part of the Project should address the identified humanitarian concern and propose concrete steps to reduce or eliminate it from the community in concern. Projects must be student-initiated and student-led in a team of 4. Projects may be a completely new project, or be part of an already existing initiative such as a SA or CAS activity.

My name is Gabriel Kalamata with so many years of experience of teaching practical of piano and theory of music.
I follow the ABRSM [The Exam Board of Royal Schools of Music] curriculum from UK whereby students can learn music theory and practical piano lessons from grade 1-8.
Piano students can take part of ABRSM exams once per year.This not compulsory its up to the decision of the student.
Here is time available at the moment for piano lessons.
Monday 2;30-3;30 pm
Tuesday 12;-10;00 pm,3;00- 4;00 pm
Wednesday 2;30-3;30 pm
Thursday 3;30-4;30 pm

Fee for the lesson of 30 minutes is Tshs 20000 and 40000 for one hour lesson[payable at the beginning of the term].
