Our week ended on a busy note yesterday with the annual Rotary ISMAC Triathlon. A beautiful day when much of the Arusha Community come together in a show of blood, sweat, tears! This year’s event had it all, with super fast times in all categories, great sportsmanship and we even had bees and spitting cobras joining in! There are too many people to thank individually so I would just like to record a big thank you to everyone who helped.

The event, of course, is designed as a community day for the Rotary Club of Arusha and aims to raise funds for needy projects in the Arusha Region, whilst having a bit of fun. This year we are hopeful of raising in excess of TZS6million. We will share the full details of the fundraising effort when all the costs have been taken into consideration. We will also share our ideas for the projects that this money will be directed towards.

The service action continues this week with the World Clean Up Day. ISMAC are hoping to join forces with Magereza School over the road from our Arusha Campus to do a refuse sweep of the areas around both our schools. More details to follow on Monday.

Our current PTA Chairperson, Maral, lends a spritely finish to her team triathlon effort.

An amazing effort by Caedmon Swanson who took on the adults in the Individual Elite category. 

It has been another busy week across primary and secondary: EC have been racing around their bike track, P4/5 have visited Plaster House, M5 have been learning about financial investments and D1 began their online courses with Pamoja. Of course this is just a sample of all the amazing experiences our students are exposed to on a daily basis.

This weekend sees students travel to the North Pare mountains on the Level 1B OP trip; we wish them well.

Next week the P4-6 students take part in their MAP tests (more information below). These will then move to secondary with M1-3 taking their tests in the week of 17 September.

On Monday Arusha campus will welcome twenty three universities for our first university fair of the academic year. This fair focuses on the United Kingdom. We will also be joined by over one hundred students from other schools for the event. We will also launch our new online university system, BridgeU, on Monday with D1; this will allow students to explore and apply to universities around the world all from one easy to use platform. We will also be introducing M5 to system over the coming weeks.

Quarter One sees us take part in our second MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing session. The main aim of MAP is to look at growth and give students, parents and teachers indicators by which we can measure a child’s educational journey. MAP tests will take place in P4 through M3 from 10 September to 21 September, with each student taking tests in Reading, English Language and Mathematics.

These assessments are nothing for students to worry about and there is no revision or preparation they need to do. If you would like to have more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit.

M5 students were privileged this week to have representatives from Carrick Wealth on hand to speak to them about personal finance. They have been studying compound interest and discussing investments and loans in class, and this interesting talk made a valuable contribution to their understanding. They were excited to learn how each of them could become a millionaire in time for retirement for the price of a daily coffee from Starbucks!

This talk followed on the tail of two other guest speakers in the M5 science class: Charles Foley of WCS and Ethan Kinsey have both visited to contribute to our ecology unit. We are fortunate to have resident experts in our community who are so willing to share their knowledge with our students, and we are grateful to them.

In related news, in an epic battle of Feed the Dingo on Friday, Mrs Kinsey regained her place atop the leader board with just seconds left in class, only to have her score surpassed by the team of Nitzan and Simon right at the buzzer. They seem to have mastered their understanding of succession and food chains!

The Outdoor Pursuits programme at ISM provides students with opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation, leadership development and experiential learning. The OP programme consists of a graded hiking programme intented to allow students to progress progressively through challenging levels, starting with an overnight Camp-Craft trip for M1 students to learn OP basics followed up with trips from Level 1 to Level 5 – a six day trip to summit Mt Kilimanjaro. We are also developing an OP Mountain Biking programme, starting with Level 1 this semester and moving to Level 2 in Semester 2.

Signing-up for an OP trip:

To sign-up, it is the students’ responsibility to inform Ms Larpent, the OP Coordinator, of their interest in an OP trip, upon which they will receive the sign-up letter for parents. Payment can then be made directly at the accounts’ department in order to secure a spot for the trip. As there are limited places, priority will be given to students who are the first to make full payment.

OP information with cost and dates has been emailed to students and posted on ManageBac. It is also be posted on the OP notice board at school.

Mesula Organic Fruit and Vegetables are regular vendors at our Friday Market at ISMAC. The good news is that Mesula have agreed to come to ISMAC EVERY MONDAY and Friday with fruit and veg. Please come along and purchase your greens for the week from 1.30pm on the grass at the front of school. This new service starts Monday 20th August.
