The victorious troupe of Miss Alley’s dancers on their way to claiming victory in the Macooba Dance Challenge this afternoon!

Today has been an eventful day for some of our students on Arusha Campus. This morning at the crack of dawn an intrepid group of hikers met Miss Amanda for the start of their Duke of Edinburgh International Bronze Award Expedition. Simon, Dana, Harsh, Bram and Jay (pictured above) set off with smiles into the mist toward Kilimamoto Crater. After negotiating checkpoints manned by Mr Olivier, Mr Tyler and Mrs Bowen, I can report that they have already set up camp as I write and are preparing their fire and meal before the long hike home tomorrow. This afternoon, a group of parents descended on Arusha Modern school where the Macooba Inter School’s Dance Challenge was being hosted. Miss Alley has been working with her talented dance group in a CCA this quarter and all that hard work came to fruition when the judges awarded the winners trophy to ISMAC!!! Quite frankly they were excellent. Their creativity in choreographing their dance about refugees was a credit to our school and Miss Alley. Well done ladies!

Finally, best of luck to our Diploma examinees who start their exams this week. Please all remember to be as quiet as possible in the exam area whilst these exams are in session.

This week has felt a little quiet in Secondary due to the D2s being on exam leave. This will all change on Monday when we start the final examinations for our almost-graduates. To get us ready we were visited by the International Baccalaureate this week, who complemented us on our preparations and systems. I am sure we all join together in wishing the D2 students all the best for their exams over the next three weeks.

Please remember that the examinations take place in S21 (Maths) and S22 (I&S/English), so we request all students and parents to be as quiet as possible in this area of the school. Exams normally start at 08.00 and may go through to 16.00.

In PYP and MYP daily life continues, with lessons and CCAs as normal. On Wednesday P4/5 and M1 came together for a presentation by Erik Anders Henell (Maja and Molly’s dad) about their experiences during the Nepal earthquake – being exactly three years ago to the day on 25 April 2015. This talk linked to P4/5s unit on natural disasters and M1s on plate tectonics. To follow up, the P4/5s led share-time on Friday; presenting their knowledge of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, droughts and floods. We all now feel prepared for anything.

P6 have been working hard on research and preparation for their exhibition, with visits to various offices and places around Arusha. We wish them well in their work and look forward to an excellent exhibition evening on Tuesday 15 May.

This weekend will see the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award students trekking off into the distance on their final expedition. We wish them and the staff (Miss Amanda, Mr Emond, Mr Tyler and Mr Bowen) well and hope the rain stays away for their two day hike.

Did you know we have 26 different countries represented at our school?
To help us prepare for the upcoming International Festival, we will be learning about different cultures at the Share time on Friday, May 4th. We are encouraging students to dress in colours from their flag on this day.

We are excited to share what we have learned about culture with others.

A fully mobile planetarium will be visiting Arusha Campus in the week leading up to the International Festival (May 14th – 18th). All students will be invited to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity. The five metre dome will be erected in the Design Studio, and safari guides, companies and other schools will all be visitors to this attraction. ‘Our’ day will be on the day of the Festival itself, Friday May 18th. There will be a charge for each child of TZS10 000 which will be used to compensate for the cost of the visiting planetarium. ISMAC parents may also ‘sponsor’ the visit of a student from Magereza School across the road at a further cost of TZS5 000. More details will follow. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Ethan (Kinsey) for enabling us to set up this opportunity.

We wish the M5 class all the best for their on-screen examinations on May 8-18. During that time, M5 students have a modified timetable where all ePortfolio classes are used as Study Blocks to prepare for exams.

In Quarter 3, M5 students were asked to brainstorm ideas for their week on work experience. During Life Skills this quarter, students wrote their CV and cover letter to send and apply for their week of work experience.  Next week, students need to have secured confirmation from a supervisor from the company or institution where they intend to work. The completed Work Experience Form must be submitted to Mr Emond.

Last week saw the release of our new fundraising video for support for our IB Diploma scholarships. Now we have a new way to give easily from all over the world with credit, debit and Paypal. ISM has always been a trailblazer, being the first IB school in Africa and now we want to increase our scholarships to around 30 a year, partial and full, to students all around the world and join the prestigious UWC movement.
