The sun goes down on an era! This weekend we did our annual teachers camping trip to Tarangire and used the occasion to say a fitting goodbye to some of our leaving teachers.

P6 went to Randilen and then Mto wa Mbu for their camp this last week. 

Its nothing remarkable that the two pictures that appear at the front of this newsletter are photos of trees in the wilderness and people making the most of that winderness. In a weekend when our campus was given over to the second Youth 4 Nature conference where young conservationists from around Tanzania spoke about their vision for the future of the country’s environment, we are reminded about the unmatchable asset on our doorstep that is Tanzania’s natural environmnent. An asset that we are privileged to be able to explore and learn from. Its no wonder that more and more students who come through their UWC National Committees select East Africa as the UWC College of their choice. Everyone knows the outdoor lifestyle is a health boon in a world dominated by on-screen media and when the chance to go outdoors comes hand in hand with the opportunity to serve the very environment you are exploring then everyone’s a winner!

I write this having got back this evening from a night’s camping with some of the teachers who will be leaving us this year. Miss Christy, Miss Nathalie, Mr Niels, Mr Juan and Miss Kaya had a great time and what more fitting reward for years of amazing service than a chance for the rest of us to say thank you in Tarangire. Thank you to ALL our leavers!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Bryan and I am coming to teach Environmental Systems and Societies as well to help manage the Outdoor Pursuits on Arusha Campus.  I’m passionate about education and see teaching as a chance to really make a difference, travel, spend time outdoors, and create lasting memories.

I love sports, stamp collecting and photography, and I enjoy capturing exciting moments and staying active. I’m looking forward to starting my journey with the IB and UWC, and I’m excited about the personal and professional growth opportunities they’ll offer.

P4/5 create shopkeeping role play situations in the images above.

Role play is a fantastic way to learn. Role play activities spark creativity and allow children to unleash their imaginative side. This is an excellent way to teach students how to find social approaches for varied real-life scenarios. Planning short role plays activities for students helps them to make sense of real-life challenges and scenarios. They learn the value of teamwork, decision-making, and time management along with practical tips to handle situations. The P4/5 class created shops and gave the P3/4 money to spend in the shops. The P4/5 class looked at marketing strategies and were able to reflect on why (or why not) their product sold.

P6 on their school camp……ok the swimming pool was a bit of a luxury!

P6 went off this last week for two nights in Randilen Game Management area followed by a night under canvas in the more luxurious surroundings of Migombani Campiste by Lake Manyara. A great end to the year for P6!

What is a Balanced Break?

This has been a whirlwind time on campus, and we are all looking forward to the end of the school year even though it is filled with a mix of emotions. The long break is a well deserved time away from demands of the regular school day, but it is also an excellent opportunity to prepare for what awaits our rising D2 students next year as well as everyone who follows in their footsteps. To prepare for this glorious gift of time, I have been providing a plethora of resources for the Class of 2025 to review and remember to access in order to stay on top of their post-secondary planning process. However, I want to be sure to remind everyone that it is essential to experience a break that allows each student (and staff) to come back refreshed and ready for the adventure that awaits them in August.

1. Rest and even take naps during the day.
2. Spend time reading for pleasure, in addition to academic endeavors.
3. Gain valuable experience and skills through working or volunteering.
4. Go outside and play, no matter what your age.
5. Schedule time for catch up/get ahead work, but don’t try to do too much.

As my favorite character from ‘A Different World’ used to say, “Relax, relate, release,” as you enjoy the wonderful gift of time.

Don’t Miss Next Week’s Final Admissions Talk

On Tuesday our students ‘demonstrated interest’ during an enlightening and engaging session with Darren Drabek from Skidmore College as he shared a multitude of ways that students can connect with institutions. During the session Mr. Drabek highlighted the value of expressing interest in an institution, which he explained can be an important part of the application process that is often overlooked. From opening emails to attending virtual events and signing up for interviews, there are an array of options available to students to ensure an institution knows that they are doing their homework and would strongly consider enrolling if offered admission. This firsthand knowledge was provided to our students from someone who has over twenty years of working with UWC schools through the Davis UWC Scholar Partners program, and we are so grateful that he spent an hour with a small group of eager students.
