Dear Parents

Ilse and Leonora (both D1) were out in Arusha this morning working on their Biology Internal Assessment. Here, in the image above, they are taking water samples from one of Arusha’s many urban rivers. The investigation? To evaluate whether there is a correlation between water quality and the diversity of plant life beside the river.

A shortened newsletter this week due to Friday’s Union Day holiday and the onset of Diploma exams. However, we wanted to alert everyone to the Art Auction that will be taking place from 5.30pm (EAT) on Tuesday 30th April. This event will take place at Schwari and everyone is welcome. Parents from far away will also be able to join in the auction thanks to our on-line live auction bidding sheets. A special bulletin will go out in the coming hours with links to direct you to those auction bidding sheets. Should be a lot of fun!

The facilities at our campus are always in high demand but especially so during the rainy season as our football pitch is generally the last pitch in Arusha to become waterlogged. We invite all our stakeholders to welcome guests to our facilities. Please do not hesitate to ask people questions and help them understand what is acceptable and what is not. We try and put all events such as these in the Community Calendar which is accessible to everyone. Our friends from Asilia will be using the pitch for their annual football tournament on Saturday 11th May.

We look forward to hearing about the goings on in Primary in next week’s newsletter including the P4/5 Camp that took place last week.

A reminder that Diploma Exams have started so thank you for keeping noise down while these are happening.

FInally, as we go into the month of May, I will use the newsletter to introduce our new teachers that will be joiining us in August 2024.

Decisions (D2), Decisions (D1), Decisions (M5)

Decision Days are coming! For many of our D2s, they have to make a decision by 1 May (USA), with some exceptions due to delay in financial aid paperwork processing (Ugh, new FAFSA!!). Although the choice was easy for some, others are finding it quite difficult. I remain available to discuss any concerns that students have about finalizing their post-secondary destination decision, and hope that they are consulting all relevant resources to make the best choice for themselves, while also trying to BEAT their response deadline in order to move forward. There are others with later application deadlines and/or decision dates, but stay on top of things so that you do not miss your “Decision Day” based on the country(ies) you have applied to. I am so sorry that we will not be able to have a proper “Decision Day” celebration like I was used to back in the US on 1 May, but I encourage students and their families to celebrate their decision in your own special way. Also remember to keep building that R.A.F.T. for a smooth transition to the next chapter in their life journey.

D1 and M5 Decisions

D2s are not the only ones with big decisions to make as we make our way through this final quarter of the school year. For D1s, they are beginning the process of developing a list of possible post-secondary destinations, and working to understand everything that they need to consider as they create a balanced list of options. In DSS on Thursday, we held separate sessions for students based on their most likely destination after their time at UWC East Africa is done. We introduced resources and talked about key information they need to know as they continue working on their post-secondary plan. D1 guardians/parents are welcome to be a part of this process with their student, and are invited to join us on 22 May for Part II of the post-secondary planning series we started in March.

M5s are not only finalizing plans for their Work Experience destination after a skill building session in Life Skills with Ms. Delphine on Wednesday, but they are also putting serious thought into what courses/curriculum they will embark on next year. This is the first time many of them have had to make such weighty decisions, and it is great to see so many of them utilizing their resources and reflecting skills. I have enjoyed meeting with some of the M5 students who have scheduled appointments with me to discuss their options, and welcome others. For the D1s who will not join us until next school year, I look forward to sharing some resources with you, and being a part of one of your upcoming virtual orientation sessions to give you some food for thought to assist with your course selection process.

In the meantime, please continue to keep checking the list of …
