The visiting UWC East Africa Shareholders visited us this week and here is a picture of their Chariman, Bishop Shoo, addressing our teachers at coffee time.

We look back on a week which was punctuated by numerous enjoyable events. We were privileged to be visited by our UWC East Africa Shareholders who loved meeting our students and seeing our beautiful campus. At the weekend we were visited by representatives from the region’s National Committees. There was a football match for our U19 Boys against a local youth development side and a service visit to Kafika House. On top of all that we had a throughly successful Open Week when many students from other schools in Arusha came along for a taste of UWC. This week, many of our senior students met their deadlines including the dreaded Extended Essay submission. What a feeling to have handed that in! And then, away from school we managed to enjoy watching World Cup rugby and cricket. We have a brand new gym opening next to the school and I know a group of our fitness fanatics are looking forward to joining that club to use the amazing machines on offer. I noticed today that the sweltering weather had brought out the weekend swimmers in large numbers as I don’t recall ever seeing so many people in our swimming pool! It was wonderful to see the community enjoying themselves. I even had time this weekend to make a bird table for outside my office!

However, we know that not everyone around the world has enjoyed such a week. Whilst I would always want us to remember having fun at UWC East Africa, I think we all know that in signing up to be a UWC East Africa member it is incumbent upon us to take an interest when events take place such as they did in Israel and Gaza in recent days. We cannot stand by and simply turn the ‘television’ onto the less uncomfortable sport channels. We met as a secondary school on Monday and agreed that it was not our place, nor helpful, to take sides when discussing this conflict on our social media. We must be careful not to post careless comments that can hurt already sore feelings. Every single one of us have a duty to help resolve conflict and an action we can engage in immediately is to offer care and kindness to anyone caught up in this awful situation. That is what we will do, without prejudice or interest in anything other than the safety of humanity.

We have had a fantastic first week back. There have been so many great activities going on around school. The P4/5’s made solar pizza ovens and melted marshmallows and the P3/4 have been looking for patterns all around school. P1 have started a new unit about homes around the world and how household objects have changed and EC have started a unit about living things. P6 have been creating questions to explore their unit on media including; how can we use media responsibly? and how has media changed over time?

Great first week back for MYP. Students are back to their routines and we enjoyed welcoming visiting students in our classes during our Open Week.

MAP growth reports were shared with M1-3 parents during the break. Next week, we will have a parent info session to explain how MAP scores are generated and how we interpret these. Please join us in the Performance Area on Tuesday 24th October at 8am if you are interested.

This week a group of our students visited Kafika House (see image above)  – nothing new in that other than this was the first visit snce the organisation was renamed Kafika. It was formerly known as Plaster House.

Nicolene Viljoen (M1)  has been selected to represent Tanzania in the 8th Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championship, which will be hosted in Kigali in November 2023.

Africa Aquatics Zone 3 is a prestigious Regional Competition, and to be selected to represent yourcountry is a great achievement so well done to Nicolene from all of us!

Welcome back visits

Only one week into the second quarter, the D2s were reminded that we were exactly two weeks away from the first major early application deadline. We welcomed visits in person and virtually from institutions that are excited to invite our students to their campuses. After adjusting to the regular routine, we had a lunch date with a representative from the College of the Atlantic with a very unique self-designed curriculum model, and a stunning island campus filled with creative students from around the world. Later that day we hosted the newest Davis UWC Scholar Partner institution, Goucher College, and learned all about their progressive programming as part of their Edge model. Thursday night provided an opportunity for students to engage in a conversation with a representative from the University of Wisconsin, which is a large institution with 14% of their population from international destinations providing a stellar scholarship program for six phenomenal applicants each year. Lastly, on Friday we were treated to a Canadian visit when a representative from University of British Columbia shared information about both campuses,  and their major international scholarship program. A great way to jump back into exploring options and preparing for life after UWC East Africa.

Next week will be filled with informative opportunities that go beyond learning about Davis Partner institutions, with specialists sharing their expertise to assist with the college application process. Please prepare to log into virtual programs that span the globe from North America to Europe, and end with a virtual event from Japan on Saturday. On Saturday 28th October 2023, UWC East Africa will host “State of The Ape Address”, an adaptation of Franz KAFKA’s “The Report to the Academy” (1907). The play is produced by Madsoc Theatre, a professional theatre company in Malawi, run by Mwezi Arts. Mwezi Arts’ Executive and Creative Director is Stanley Malizani Mambo, an internationally acclaimed Malawian director and actor.

What’s Your Kilimanjaro is a fun fund raising initiative that aims to support the plight of women in Tanznai who are struggling to prosper beneath the poverty line.

More details will follow in the new term but we aim to get as many people involved as possible.
