The story of the week (apart from the revelation that we perhaps are not the No 1 School in Tanzania!) was the spectacular downpour of rain on Thursday morning. Ngaramtoni ya Chini awoke to swirling rapids, floating cars and catastrophic damage to the neighbourhood. Our school was let off lightly but next door at Sable Square there was a different story. Shops and cafes were submerged, costing thousands of shillings woirth of damage. UWC East Africa students to the rescue! Barely was registration over before the entire M4 Class paddled over to help with the cleanup operation. They perfromed amazing service and community members exclaimed their thanks to them all. Asanteni M4!

Of course the real concern is for the community members who live in sub-standard housing and possibly lost everything. We will be finding out about these losses and how we can help in coming days.

Ramadan has started – a period when Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Qur’an, and fast from food and drink during the sunlit hours as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate.

P4/5 with Plaster House students

The students and teachers have had another busy week in the primary school. The P2’s visited Arusha Coffee Lodge and were treated to 3 different types of cake! The P3’s visited Burka Coffee head Offices to learn about the processes involved in commercial coffee production. The P4/5’s organised different games to play with the students from Plaster House. The P6’s are diving head first into their Exhibition units of inquiry.

Everyone enjoyed the two swimming events. I am so impressed with how confident everyone is in the water. It was a pleasure to see so many happy smiling faces in the water playing fun games.

The students are all preparing for the Student Led Conferences on Wednesday 29th March. Please remember this is a non-teaching day and to come along with your child at the allocated time.

The P2’s visited Arusha coffee lodge (see image above) to learn about the features and services of the tourism industry. We were very lucky to have a tour of the establishment and look at Shanga, the coffee shops, gifts store as well as have a lovely treat of hot chocolate and cakes.

On Thursday evening (pictured above), we celebrated the 9 months of M5 personal project journey by students presenting their learning experiences through success and challenges they faced aswell as showing off their products. Congratulations to all the students for putting their best foot forward and delivering exceptional presentations! Their hard work and dedication have truly paid off. Keep up the great work!

The MYP personal project is a student-centered and age-appropriate practical exploration in which students consolidate their learning throughout the program. The personal project formally assesses students’ ATL skills for self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration. They should now be ready to apply these skills to their IAs in DP!

More information is coming your way, so please stay tuned as we plan to provide an array of resources via a multitude of platforms to make sure students and parents are well prepared for the journey ahead.

Our annual arts showcase is this Thursday, 30th of March. The evening will feature art/design exhibitions from M1-D2 students and live music and theatre performances. Beverages and Snacks are available from the PTA stand on the night. We welcome everyone from the community to this celebration of the Arts! Please note attendance is mandatory for all M1-D2 arts students. A schedule of events will be emailed in the coming days.

Have you been following the professional paths of members of our staff throughout the school? (image above) In the lead up to next week’s UWC East Africa Careers Symposium: Building 21st Century Skills (Wednesday and Thursday, 29-30 March), staff have taken a moment to reflect on the path to their current career and share their journey with students via these posters throughout the school. Very few people have a straight path from tertiary education to one career, thus these posters help students see the variety of jobs and careers that lead staff members to their current roles. This leads to important discussions with students about their path, and ways that they can explore their interests throughout their career journey.

Getting started is not always easy, and through activities and exploration in M4-D2, students are tasked with taking time for self-reflection and utilizing resources in Maia Learning and other sources to consider all options that may work best for them. Here are two resources that recently became available that may serve as tools for conversation and discovery over the April break:
