As I write this, we have just finished Sports Weekend here at the UWC East Africa Moshi campus. A 22-year tradition, this year we saw 10 schools join the two campuses for a marathon of sports. About 700 students started playing sports Friday at 12:30pm and went to 9:30 pm. They then started Saturday at 7am and went to after 10pm, on Sunday again we started at 7am to finish the last final about 2:30pm. Many participants played over 10 matches with some over 20 matches in this time. As you can see in the photo below from the opening ceremony, they look fresh and rested. Not quite the way they looked at the end. We will send out details on the winners and more photos separately.
An event of this magnitude requires a lot of help and I do not have space to thank people individually, but the sports department worked incredibly hard before and during this event. Our kitchen staff, cleaners, gardeners, medical staff and drivers put in long hours to keep the event going. The teachers and other staff ran or supported events even if they were new to them. The PTA ran the concessions, and the students ran the market and drinks stalls. An all-round effort.
Next week will continue to be full as we have an assembly on Monday, OP trips, sports and a trip to Arusha campus for their holiday fair.

Residential Life
My apologies or this newsletter being short, but perhaps it epitomizes how much effort went into ensuring the incredible sports weekend and full immersion from all our residential students in various capacities went smoothly and raised our school spirit. As already said, I am so proud of our students, staff, and our community for rallying behind one another in what was another successful and non-stop weekend on top of every one’s busy schedules.
However, I cannot write this without thanking our Irish Residential students who hosted another cultural evening where we learnt about their special history, heritage, and culture. Of course, without a little bit of dancing too. Thank you, Conn, Laura, and Anna, for an amazing evening. In addition to this, a special thank you must also go to Ataho who organised both Diploma and MYP trips to see the new Marvel movie over the weekend in Arusha!
Please note that I am formalising our plans for the December break and hope to have this completed by Wednesday 23 November. Please ensure you have made appropriate plans for your child and communicated this accordingly with either me, or their respective residential parents. We officially close our residential dorms on Saturday 10 December and re-open on Sunday 11 January.

Events Thank you to the parents and students who have participated in our university fairs, presentations, and webinars this semester. Our last virtual scheduled virtual event for this semester will be the University of Leiden on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, from 7:30-8:30 pm. Outdoor Pursuits
As semester one comes to a close, we have 43 hikers preparing for Peaks Level 3 hike to Mount Hanang. Taking place from the 26th to the 29th of November. We wish them well on next week’s trip.
We have no trips this weekend as it is sports weekend, however I thought it would be great to share a link to UWC East Africa’s Values. It is our aim in the Outdoor Pursuits program to live out these values and for students to strive to reach them on our trips. Have a great week ahead everyone.

PYP News
Last Friday, the Daycare Centre presented in the Primary Gathering to share some of the learning they have been doing with Ms. Grace and Mr. Elias. We very much enjoyed listening to the songs and hearing how the children have dreams of becoming teachers, nurses, pastors, businessmen and drivers to name but a few.
On Friday, 25th November, we will have a PYP sharing assembly in Rafiki at 7:40am. All of the children will present something that they have been doing in the classroom and we will also hear from the specialist teachers.
On Friday afternoon, many of the PYP children will be participating in a friendly football match against PPA, Kibo and Neema schools. We wish them a successful afternoon.
The deadline for the logo competition for Beauty and the Beast is Thursday, 24th November. Please encourage your child to participate. All entries will be displayed on the night and the winning designs will be used on tickets, programs and posters for the production. All entries should be on plain white paper and should have the child’s name on the back.

It has been a week of building towers and exploring shapes. Next week we will be using boxes to do the same. If you have any empty cereal boxes, please send them our way.
This week we had everyone in the pool and we had three students swim widths with a board and without arm bands, demonstrating confidence and growth. Well done to all the students.

P2/3 Class
Another lovely week of biome hopping! We had an unusual combination of rainforests and then the arctic. We focused on the use of camouflage in both areas as animals’ adaptations for survival.
We hope that you’ll all be able to make it to the Sharing Assembly on Friday. We’d like to invite you to come by our classroom afterwards to see more of the work that we’ve doing this unit. We have created a few art pieces and we plan on doing more next week in groups as our summative activity. I intend to send an email mid-week with details.

P4/5 Class
Next week the children will be working with thermometers and graphing the daily temperature. We will also complete a graph about world population. We will continue with our work on multiplication and division. On Monday, we will start a weaving project and hope to display the results at the Evening of the Arts on Friday, 2nd December. The children will work with Google Slides and will use their recent research to produce a presentation on a natural disaster of their choice.
