Arusha Campus Newsletter Friday 20th April 2018

The P3’s had a wonderful time this week dipping in the pond at Burka as part of their Unit on Biomes

Dear Parents

The word of the week has been ‘R-A-I-N’ on Arusha Campus. The heavy downpours have kept the gardening team working overtime and for the first time in my career at ISMAC, the small river on the eastern boundary of the campus actually started flowing. Whilst the rain has been fun for most, our thoughts go out to the families of Hadija and Christina who were two primary school girls from Arusha who died in the floods. They, and many others have been victims of the heavy rain.

As Mr Acomb says below, we congratulate our D2 graduates who left their classrooms for the very last time today. Their work is not over, as now begins the tricky part of examination time. Best of luck to you all. You have completed your journey, are well prepared for the challenge ahead and will come through with flying colours!

Last weekend, Moshi Campus hosted a gala dinner to raise money for a scholarship student to attend ISM. The event raised a magnificent sum in excess of $15 000 so congratulations to the organisers for a super achievement. Dont forget that next week we will be closed for Thursday 26th April as we will be celebrating Union Day which is a public holiday.

Have a pleasant weekend and I hope to see some of you at St Constantine’s tomorrow for the U19 Rugby and U15 Netball.

From the Primary and Secondary Schools

Friday was a momentous moment in the lives of our D2 students: their last day of formal lessons. From Monday they are on exam leave and will only be in school for specific revision sessions. This marks the end of their secondary/high school careers and a right of passage towards the wider world beyond ISM. To celebrate this moment we had a lunch for the D2s and their teachers: a not-quite farewell, before they start their final examinations on 30 April. I am sure everyone joins me in wishing them well for the revision week and for all the exams which follow. Good luck D2!

Wishing you all a good weekend,

Darren

Meet the new teachers – Dave Ratsakatika (PE) and Tanya Ellis (Science)

We are so pleased that Dave and Tanya will be joining the ISMAC team in August. Both of them are keen athletes – Tanya an avid runner whilst Dave is a jack of all trades enjoying everything from football to weightlifting! They are both intrepid travellers and Dave has even climbed Kilimanjaro! A huge ‘Karibuni’ to both of you from all of us at ISM and we look forward to seeing you in August.

M3 Inter-disciplinary Unit to Tumaini

d

Last week from April 10-12, the combined Arusha and Moshi campus’ M3 classes traveled to Tumaini University’s brand new Cultural Arts Center for the Interdisciplinary Trip combining Arts and Kiswahili. Under the themes of “Kilimo ni Uti wa Mgongo” and “Sanaa na Mazingira Yake” students participated in Performing and Visual Arts workshops conducted in a mixture of Kiswahili and English. The workshops included drumming/drum-making, dancing/backdrop painting, and drama/mask and props-making, all to be included in the final, summative performance given by students and CAC staff. The technology-oriented students were even able to learn how to produce lighting effects and run sound for a large venue. Along with the students’ own development with Arts and Language skills, they were able to see a wide array of performances on Tanzanian instruments from different regions as well as watch a professional performance of Music, Dance, and Drama presented by CAC staff, all focused on specific traditions across the entire nation. The student performance was a great success enjoyed both by audience members and the students themselves. It is sure to be a memorable trip for all! Thank you to Mwalimu Gift Tyea for accompanying and to Linda Willms for organizing and communicating between campuses and the CAC faculty.

P3 Trip to Burka Pond

P3 went on a wild pond safari to Burka Pond and learned about how animals and plants live together to create a certain type of ecosystem. Thank you to Mark Thornton, Tony Reumerman and Anoek Van der Goot for joining us on our visit. We noticed that weavers live near the pond and build their nests in the tall grass, we learned to be careful of where we step when we are near a pond, we saw a lot of Sykes monkey’s around the pond ecosystem, we saw baby fish that are the color of the rainbow and much, much more!
Our next trip will be to Ngare Sero Lodge in USA to camp out and explore the next big pond ecosystem!

M5 eAssessments

Last week, M5 students completed mock on-screen exams using past on-screen exams from 2017. Students still have access to all past exams from 2015 and 2016 and are strongly encouraged to complete them at home for additional practice.

The final MYP on-screen examinations will take place on May 8-18: starting with I&S on May 8, Mathematics: May 10, English: May 11, Science: May 17 and Interdisciplinary: May 18.  During that time, students will have a modified timetable  where ePortfolio classes will be used as Study Blocks in order to review for on-screen exams.

Students’ ePortfolios in Drama, Visual Arts, Music, Design, PHE and French have now been sent to the IB. Teachers’ grades and comments for ePortfolios and the Personal Project are posted on ManageBac.

M5 Work Experience May 21-25

In Quarter 3, M5 students were asked to brainstorm ideas for their week on work experience. During Life Skills this quarter, students wrote their CV and cover letter to send and apply for their week of work experience.  Next week, students need to have secured confirmation from a supervisor from the company or institution where they intend to work. The completed Work Experience Form must be submitted to Mr Emond.
